To kick off 2012, we want to bring you a project from Kate Singer, an extremely talented designer and a great friend and supporter of Kravet. Based in Long Island, NY, Singer’s projects reflect a calm, serene atmosphere that is both luxurious and livable for her clients. Here, she answers our questions about her most recent project completed in Hewlett Neck in Nassau County, NY, featured here.
Tell us about the inspiration for the design.
I am always inspired by the colors & textures in nature, in particular the sea, the sand, and the sky. This home is set on a beautiful piece of property on Long Island's south shore where each season provides an incredible new color palette. We were surrounded by natural inspiration from the landscape throughout the design process.
How did you collaborate with the clients?
The clients brought me into the project from the beginning, blue prints in hand, with ambitions for total gutting and reconstruction. The wife was involved in every aspect and we were unbelievably in sync each step of the way. We were always bringing the same tear sheets and pictures for ideas and inspiration to our meetings, which was very serendipitous.
What were their goals and how does the space achieve them?
Their goals were the same as my overall design principals: to create a truly livable home, a comfortable, nurturing environment that would please the eye and soothe the senses. One in which they would enjoy many years of happiness and creating lifelong memories while raising their young family. Every room is approachable and welcoming and features comfortable yet durable fabrics and furniture.
Did the children participate in the design process?
Each of the children played a large part in decorating their bedrooms, which was great fun. I think it's important to allow young people the opportunity to express their ideas and creativity in their living spaces (within reason of course!).
Does your work have a signature “look”?
While my design approach is always tailored to suit the lifestyles & tastes of each client, I would say my signature aesthetic is one of quiet and calm, pared-down rooms in which one can truly live, relax and entertain comfortably. My basic principles are based on symmetry, balance and in finding beauty in simplicity. I often try to bring in the natural beauty which exists outside the home in a harmonious way, especially with properties like this one that are near the water.
