Every summer House Beautiful collaborates with a chef or designer to create the Kitchen of the Year, which is constructed on the plaza in front of Rockefeller Center in New York City.
This year, Tyler Florence worked with designer Lori Yeomans of USA Interior Design to create a Northern California-inspired kitchen, complete with both indoor and outdoor cooking and dining areas. Florence is a chef, a Food Network TV personality, a columnist for House Beautiful, a restaurateur, a cookbook author and the owner of his own chain of kitchen stores in Northern California. His restaurants include Wayfare Tavern in San Francisco, Rotisserie & Wine in Napa, and El Paseo in Mill Valley, California.
“The kitchen is the new American living room,” said Florence, introducing the Kitchen of the Year. For years we’ve seen kitchens grow to include dining and even living areas, and open kitchen layouts becoming the standard for modern renovations.
Florence and Yeomans chose Kravet fabrics and Kravet dining chairs for the indoor dining area, which features a mix of chair and fabric styles for a laid-back yet sophisticated look. Mixing and matching the Parisian Side Chair with the Solo Chair, they selected the following fabrics for the upholstery, clockwise from far left: 28515-81, 28749-1630, Odani in Carob (30369-86), 305866-840, 28515-81, Glazed Band in Cactus (28644-316), 30566-840, Flamme Velvet in Leaf (11898-2323).
Florence will be on hand for free cooking demonstrations and special events through July 22. From August 1-15, the kitchen will be transformed into Bar 30, and it will be open to the public serving snacks and cocktails. Afterwards, products and building materials are donated to ReStore Habitat for Humanity.
