As we face the conclusion of the holiday season and look ahead to 2014, we thought we’d take a moment to celebrate 2013 and some of the wonderful initiatives in our industry that married design with philanthropy in a way that was inspiring, and most importantly, effective.
Ours is an industry that is known for its generous spirit. Once you feel the power of design, and the impact that design can have on your daily life, you want to share it and help others experience it as well. Show houses are an important expression of this generosity. They serve the dual purpose of celebrating the creativity of the designers showcased while raising much needed funds for causes worthy of attention.
In the past year, we’ve seen incredible rooms from the Holiday House Hamptons and Holiday House NYC (pictured in this post), both of which raise money and awareness for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The Home is Where the Heart Is show house in Long Island benefitted the American Heart Association. DIFFA’s Dining by Design event showcases tabletop installations from the very best in our industry while raising money for AIDS awareness and education.
A show house very close to our hearts at Kravet was Project Design 2013, which involved the renovation of the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. Not only did the project raise money for the ongoing operating costs of the house, the beautifully designed rooms will serve the families who stay there (often at no charge) while their children receive lifesaving care at the nearby Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center.
The model for the permanent show house, seen with Project Design 2013, is one we hope will start a trend in the years to come. Often the people who would most benefit from the healing powers of design find it just outside their grasp, and we can change that.
Each of the charities mentioned above is hyperlinked to its individual website. We encourage you to make a donation if you’re able. Let’s all carry the virtues and generosity of the holiday season forward into 2014, and always aim to do more and give more than we did the year previous. Thank you all for being our partners this year, we wish you all the best for the holidays and in the year to come.
