Alexa Hampton and Windsor Smith are enthusiastic, really enthusiastic, about life and design. Combinations of legacy and upstart, they are two women from two coasts whose brands are personified by their vivid personalities and creative vitality. They could be sisters -- kindred spirits, BFF -- adoring each other while arranging a room, but then independently certain about rearranging it. If you met them (and I hope you do, or at least design with their fabrics, carpet and trimmings) you may not even be able to tell them apart, and you probably shouldn’t even try. Although they are unique in many ways, try to discover below whose views belong to whom, or to you for that matter.
“I love treasures and architecture of the past; but traditions that are not too buttoned-down. No part of the house is on restricted-access. We are like architects of families’ life styles, full of rhythm and pace."
“I am enthusiastic about seeing - always looking, observing. My eye travels, often inspired by fashion and media. We edit through a curatorial eye; some ideas and some things stay, others are eliminated, usually for the better.”
“But I believe in style more than fashion. The more free design is from fashion, the better. The result is a place for the fashionable moment, but not dated by some trend. Our clients would not appreciate decor that has an expiration date.”
“My clients get me. They have real style, are used to finer things and expect to spend some considerable money on some things, but not spend a lot on other things. Working with them is like negotiating our own sense of style and theirs. The experience is reciprocal. We collaborate. We give our clients space in which to speak, acting as a filter for their own expression.”
“Clients are wildly educated about design and fluent in the language of design, enabling them to communicate more effectively. As a result, the design process yields warranties of harmony -- a mix of product, provenance, color, texture and temperament.”
“Today, design is de-mystified, but saturated with options. Too many for most people, so they need us now more than ever. And we are completely accountable to them for their trust in us.”
“In my own life, I am am a little rambunctious and boisterous, but my interiors are calm and sympathetic and nurturing.”
So, how do they find any balance in their lives -- each is mother and spouse and so much more -- while mixing professional, personal, parenting?
“I look ahead and do my best to commit to being totally present when it’s family time.”
“I am enthusiastic about the pendulum swinging toward optimism.”
While looking ahead, they both see ... “people nesting, comforted, cosseted, curled up with a yummy throw with family and good food.”
Alexa Hampton and Windsor Smith have created for Kravet fabric and trimmings collections that are enthusiastic about joie de vivre.
“I am so fortunate. Imagine .. a career that beckons me to blend architecture and style with the romance of traditions .. I can’t think of anything more delicious.”
And we can’t think of anything more inspiring.
